BDO Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank, has reached a significant milestone in its mission to improve healthcare access for underserved communities. With the turnover of its 200th rehabilitated Rural Health Unit (RHU) in San Jose, Camarines Sur, the foundation reinforces its commitment to enhancing primary healthcare services across the Philippines.
For years, BDO Foundation has focused on rehabilitating RHUs nationwide, with the goal of improving healthcare facilities and patient care. The milestone in San Jose underscores the foundation’s dedication to providing quality medical services to remote communities, especially in rural areas such as Bicol.
“We see each rehabilitated RHU as a stepping stone to better health outcomes for thousands of Filipinos,” said Mario Deriquito, president of BDO Foundation. “Our aim is to empower healthcare workers with improved facilities, while also giving patients easier access to the care they need.”
The newly upgraded RHU in San Jose, a one-story building, now serves over 45,000 residents from 29 barangays. The renovation included enhancements to both the interior and exterior of the facility, making it more accessible to persons with disabilities and senior citizens. The updated design also includes designated areas for breastfeeding mothers and elderly patients to ensure a more comfortable environment for all.
In a message to the community, San Jose Municipal Health Officer Dr. Arnel Armea expressed his gratitude for the support. “This rehabilitation boosts our health care personnel’s ability to serve with dignity, and ensures our community receives the care it deserves,” Dr. Armea said. “With this renovated facility, there is now space for everyone!”
Rural Health Units are essential in delivering routine check-ups, immunizations, and preventive healthcare, serving as the first line of defense for community health and wellness.
Looking ahead, BDO Foundation plans to continue its mission to strengthen grassroots healthcare by partnering with local government units, as well as BDO and BDO Network Bank branches, to further expand its network of rehabilitated health facilities.
