DOH: Prioritize Food Safety, Hygiene, and Clean Water This Rainy Season

With the rainy season raising the risk of disease, the Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) is ramping up its call for proper food handling, handwashing, and water sanitation to prevent outbreaks of food and waterborne illnesses.

DOH CLCHD Food and Waterborne Disease Program Manager Kathleen Rodriguez reminded the public to follow the World Health Organization’s five keys to food safety: keep clean, separate raw from cooked food, cook thoroughly, store food at safe temperatures, and use safe water and ingredients.

She also emphasized the importance of regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds—especially when preparing food or after using the restroom—to reduce the risk of infection.

For safe drinking water, especially in flooded areas, Rodriguez advised boiling water for at least three minutes or using chlorine solution and purification tablets. She also stressed the need for proper waste segregation to prevent contamination and the spread of disease.

To support communities lacking clean water access, DOH continues to provide technical assistance to local government units and implement programs that improve water supply, sanitation, and hygiene practices.

“Simple habits like handwashing, safe food handling, and clean drinking water can save lives—especially during the rainy season,” Rodriguez said.
