POPE LEO XIV ASSIGNS CARDINAL TAGLE TO TITULAR CHURCH FORMERLY HELD BY THE PONTIFF

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as the new titular cardinal bishop of Albano, a role the pontiff himself once held prior to his election.

Cardinal Tagle, currently the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, takes over the suburbicarian see from Pope Leo — formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost — who served as cardinal bishop of Albano since February 2025 before ascending to the papacy.

Albano is one of the seven suburbicarian dioceses near Rome, traditionally assigned to cardinal bishops, the highest-ranking members of the College of Cardinals.

Tagle previously held the title of cardinal priest of San Felice da Cantalice in Centocelle since his elevation to the cardinalate in 2012. In 2022, Pope Francis elevated him to the order of cardinal bishops, assigning him to that same church.

With this new assignment, Cardinal Tagle now holds one of the most prestigious titles in the Catholic hierarchy, continuing his prominent role in global Church affairs.
