ANGELES CITY EXPANDS PUBLIC CEMETERY IN SAPALIBUTAD

Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. officially led the inaugration today, 15 January 2025, of the Phase 2 expansion of the Angeles City Public Cemetery, marking a significant milestone in the city government’s efforts to enhance public services and improve facilities for its residents.

Located in Sapalibutad, the expansion covers 11,510 square meters and provides an additional 800 columbarium slots and 2,400 bone niches, with plans to expand further by adding 3,360 more bone niches in the future.

“The expansion of the Angeles City Public Cemetery is an important investment for the future, ensuring that we continue to provide essential services to our community,” said Mayor Lazatin. “The inauguration symbolizes our unwavering commitment to the welfare of our residents, especially during times of loss.”

Mayor Lazatin also noted the growing demand for affordable and decent burial options, a need that became particularly apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this, the city has taken proactive steps to ensure that more families have access to these services, including providing free caskets and discounts on columbarium use. Since the start of the program, 632 individuals have benefited from the free casket initiative.

The newly expanded facility also includes 37 parking slots, 837 square meters allocated for future bone niche expansions, and 1,425 square meters of open space. With a total budget of ₱70 million, the expansion aims to meet the increasing demand for burial space while maintaining a respectful and dignified environment for the city’s residents.

Following the completion of Phases 1 and 2, the public cemetery now has a total capacity of 10,118, which includes 5,752 full-body niches (5,228 for adults and 524 for children), 2,766 bone niches, and 1,600 columbarium slots. Each columbarium slot can hold 2 to 3 urns, depending on size.

The Phase 1 expansion, which added 2,748 niches, was inaugurated on September 5, 2024. In addition to expanding burial space, the city government has also upgraded the cemetery’s facilities, including the installation of a crematorium machine and two scissor lifts.

When Mayor Lazatin took office in 2019, the public memorial park had only 600 niches.
