The Angeles City government, led by Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), will conduct a comprehensive cleanup of the city’s canals and drainage systems to prevent flooding.
Mayor Lazatin announced the initiative following a meeting with DPWH representatives Rolando Gonzales and Ma. Abigail Delos Reyes on October 29, 2024. Present at the meeting were key city officials, including Chief Adviser IC Calaguas, City Councilor Atty. Arvin Suller, Environmental Management System (EMS) Head Francis Pangilinan, Acting City Engineer Helen Ayro, and engineers Angelo Tayag and Nelson Palacio.
“Lilinisin po natin lahat ng mga kanal at drainages para maiwasan po natin ang pagbaha sa ating siyudad,” said Lazatin, underscoring the administration’s commitment to flood prevention.
The city’s EMS and City Engineering Office (CEO) regularly carry out declogging and desilting operations, alongside various drainage improvement projects, to mitigate flooding risks. Mayor Lazatin also urged residents to support these efforts by practicing responsible waste disposal, noting that proper waste management is crucial for an effective drainage system.
“Nakikiusap din po ako na iwasan po natin magtapon ng basura sa mga kanal o saan man, ilagay po natin sa tamang tapunan ang ating mga basura para hindi bumara sa mga kanal natin,” he added.
As part of his administration’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and order throughout the city, Mayor Lazatin also requested the DPWH to conduct ongoing construction projects during nighttime hours to reduce daytime traffic congestion. Among these projects are the Sto. Cristo Flyover and drainage improvements along Sto. Entierro.
“Mas mainam po na tuwing gabi po gagawin ng DPWH ang mga nasabing proyekto para mabawasan po ang traffic na nararanasan natin,” Lazatin said, highlighting the effort to ease traffic flow in the city.
