Five suspects were arrested and alleged substandard electronic devices worth about ₱12.19 million were seized during a CIDG operation in Subic Bay Gateway Park, Olongapo City, Zambales on February 5, 2026.
The operation, conducted by the CIDG Regional Field Unit 3 and CIDG Olongapo City Field Unit, stemmed from the implementation of a search warrant for violation of the Consumer Act of the Philippines (RA 7394). Authorities confiscated about 2,400 laptop computers and 65 assorted mobile phones.
The arrested suspects include four Chinese nationals identified only as “Yuan,” “Liu,” “Liang,” and “Xiao,” and one Filipino identified as “Lori,” all employees of a company operating in Olongapo City. Authorities said the electronic devices allegedly lacked required National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) dealer clearance and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) certification, making them illegal for local sale.
Investigators said the devices were assembled and refurbished inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, which is intended for export operations. However, the items were allegedly diverted to the local market to avoid proper taxes and duties, resulting in losses to the government and unfair competition for legitimate businesses.
CIDG reiterated its commitment to enforcing consumer protection laws and urged the public to verify NTC and DTI certifications when purchasing electronic products and to report illegal activities in their communities.
