CONVERGE LAUNCHES DIGITAL PRIVACY ADVOCACY FOR STUDENTS

With the growing presence of young Filipinos on social media, Converge ICT Solutions Inc., a leading fiber broadband and technology provider, has introduced an advocacy program aimed at promoting digital literacy and online privacy awareness among school children.

The initiative, called Project PIGLET (Privacy Integration through Guided Learning of Emerging Technologies), was launched by the company’s Corporate Governance and Data Privacy (CGDP) Group. Its goal is to teach students about safeguarding their personal information in the digital space.

To kick off the program, Converge partnered with Francisco Legaspi Memorial School (FLMS) in Pasig City, engaging pupils from Grades 2 to 6 in an interactive and age-appropriate discussion on responsible online behavior.

“Our goal is to raise awareness about the potential risks of the internet, especially since children are exposed to gadgets and social media at an early age,” said Converge Senior Vice President and Corporate Compliance and Data Protection Officer Atty. Laurice Esteban-Tuason. “Educating kids to be vigilant online, both at home and in school, is crucial in helping them avoid falling victim to online threats.”

Creative Approach to Privacy Education
The program’s launch featured a storytelling session attended by students, parents, and teachers. Using the adventures of the fictional Astro Kids in the “Internet Universe,” Converge highlighted the dangers of sharing personal information online. In the story, the Astro Kids face deceptive monsters who attempt to trick them into revealing sensitive details like their full names, addresses, and birthdays.

With guidance from the hero Captain Conrad, the Astro Kids learn to avoid sharing personal information and to report suspicious online activity to trusted adults. This approach encouraged students to be cautious online while emphasizing the importance of involving parents and teachers in ensuring their safety.

“As technology evolves, it’s vital for everyone to stay informed and vigilant. Through this program, we aim to contribute to safer online experiences for all,” Esteban-Tuason added.

Expanding the Advocacy
Converge plans to expand Project PIGLET in 2024, targeting students at different academic levels and rolling out the campaign to more schools nationwide.

This advocacy is part of Converge’s broader efforts to foster safe online environments. In 2022, the company partnered with the UK-based Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to combat the distribution of child sexual abuse materials. Additionally, Converge joined forces with the Stairway Foundation to raise awareness about protecting children from online exploitation.

As of the end of 2023, Converge reported blocking nearly 12 billion attempts to access illicit and harmful websites, underscoring its commitment to ensuring the security of its network and users.

With Project PIGLET, Converge is taking another step toward empowering the younger generation to navigate the digital world responsibly.
