Converge partners with DICT, Comelec vs AI-backed misinformation during polls

Converge ICT Solutions Inc. is intensifying efforts to curb AI-driven misinformation, particularly ‘deepfakes,’ ahead of the May 2025 elections. Andrew T. Malijan, SVP and Corporate Information Security Officer at Converge, warned that misinformation and politically motivated content are expected to surge during the campaign season, with the internet serving as a key platform for these activities.

In support of the government’s initiative, Converge is strengthening its network to protect against malicious actors and working with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to educate the public on these online threats.

Deepfakes, AI-generated videos that manipulate individuals’ faces and voices, have been a growing concern, with the Philippines seeing a staggering 4,500% increase in cases from 2022 to 2023, according to the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.

Malijan also revealed that Converge’s network recorded 123 billion illegal access attempts in the first two months of 2025, nearing 80% of last year’s total. “At this pace, we could surpass the 2024 record of 180 billion entry attempts,” he said.

Converge continues its commitment to online safety, having recently participated in the DICT’s Safer Internet Month event, which focused on protecting children from online exploitation. As part of its advocacy, Converge partners with the UK-based Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and the local Stairway Foundation, along with Scam Watch Pilipinas to combat online scams and child abuse.
