DICT to boost Free Wi-Fi in MRT-3 stations, trains

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is set to improve free Wi-Fi access in all Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) stations and roll out key digital upgrades to enhance the commuter experience.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy announced that the initiative aims to strengthen connectivity in critical transit areas, with plans to extend free Wi-Fi coverage inside MRT-3 trains in the future.

“To deliver this, the DICT is partnering with major telecom providers to boost bandwidth and deploy in-station fiber and upgraded signal infrastructure,” Uy said.

Commuters are expected to feel initial improvements in internet speed within a month, with continuous enhancements in the coming months. The MRT-3 upgrades will serve as a pilot for similar digital rollouts in other major train lines, including LRT-1 and LRT-2, which are currently under study.

Aside from improved connectivity, the DICT is working with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to implement cashless fare payments using credit or debit cards, e-wallets, and mobile devices. AI-powered security screening systems are also being explored to streamline safety protocols.

“Through inter-agency collaboration and commuter-first digital solutions, we are not only improving transport efficiency but elevating the dignity of daily commuting,” Uy said.

Uy joined DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon in inspecting MRT-3 stations from North Avenue to Santolan-Annapolis on Monday, where they engaged with passengers and gathered feedback to inform further improvements.
