The Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) has issued a series of health tips as part of its βLigtas Christmas 2024β campaign to ensure a safe and healthy holiday season.
Theresa Marie Bondoc, Health Education and Promotion Officer of DOH CLCHD, said the campaign focuses on three components:BIYAHEalthy, Healthy Handaan, and Iwas Paputok, aimed at reducing health risks and promoting a festive yet safe celebration.
Under theBIYAHEalthy component, the DOH highlighted the importance of safe travel, particularly for those visiting provinces for reunions. Motorists are urged to perform βBLOW-BAG-SETβ inspections (brake, lights, oil, water, battery, air, gas, self, engine, tire) and ensure they are well-rested and free from distractions while driving.
βDrivers must avoid alcohol consumption, refrain from using mobile devices, and strictly follow traffic regulations. Wearing protective gear such as helmets and seatbelts is also essential to minimize accident risks,β Bondoc said.
The Healthy Handaan initiative encourages mindful eating to prevent health issues such as diabetes and hypertension. The public is advised to limit their intake of sweet, salty, and fatty foods, which are common in holiday feasts, and to avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
The DOH also emphasized food safety practices, including proper hygiene, regular handwashing, thorough cooking of meals, and correct storage of leftovers to prevent foodborne illnesses.
As part of the Iwas Paputok campaign, the agency reiterated its call to avoid the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices to reduce injuries. Families are encouraged to attend community fireworks displays or use safer alternatives, such as banging pots and pans, blowing car horns, or shaking coins in cans, to welcome the New Year.
βIn case of fireworks-related injuries, first aid should include washing the affected area with soap and water and covering it with sterile gauze. Victims should immediately seek medical attention to avoid complications,β Bondoc added.
The DOH also advised keeping emergency hotlines accessible for prompt assistance during emergencies.
These health tips align with the DOHβs 8-Point Action Agenda, which aims to improve health literacy, enhance preparedness for emergencies, and promote disease prevention among Filipino families. (PIA Region 3-Pampanga)
