DOTr pushes active transport with LGU support

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported steady progress in its active transport projects as part of the Marcos administration’s push for safer, more inclusive, and people-centered roads.

During the latest “Walk-Through Wednesday” update, DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure IC Calaguas highlighted the importance of close coordination with local government units in delivering transport projects on the ground. He thanked former Angeles City mayor and now Pampanga 1st District Rep. Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II, and the City Engineering Office led by Engr. Helen Ayro for their collaboration in implementing DOTr initiatives.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez underscored that national transport projects rely heavily on strong partnerships with LGUs to succeed, citing local support as key to timely and effective implementation. Calaguas also congratulated the DOTr Road Sector, headed by Undersecretary Steve Pastor, for the continued progress of its programs.

In Angeles City, Pampanga, the construction of 11.3 kilometers of Class 2 cycle lanes along MacArthur Highway and Friendship Highway has reached 93 percent completion as of the fourth week of January, marking a significant milestone in improving daily cycling conditions.

Meanwhile, in Malabon City, work is ongoing on a network of Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 cycle lanes, including sections with vertical gardens along P. Aquino Avenue. Around Malabon City Hall, new cycle lanes are being developed to enhance connectivity within the civic center and surrounding areas. The project is currently 35.25 percent complete.

The DOTr said these initiatives are part of its broader effort to promote active transport, encourage healthier travel choices, and create greener, more connected urban spaces, ensuring that roads serve not just vehicles, but people.
