The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has reminded domestic and international airlines operating in the Philippines to exercise their authority to inspect passengers’ passports responsibly and without abuse.
Through the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), the DOTr issued the statement following a viral social media post involving a passenger who was reportedly barred from boarding due to a tear on his passport.
While it is within an airline’s mandate to check the validity and integrity of travel documents, the DOTr emphasized that airline personnel must not misuse this authority. Airlines are also expected to coordinate with immigration authorities in passengers’ destination countries to determine if a passport with minor damage is still acceptable for entry.
The DOTr is currently investigating the incident and has reached out to immigration officials in Bali, Indonesia, to verify the airline’s claim that the damaged passport would not have been accepted upon arrival.
Additionally, CAAP and CAB have been directed to look into other reports of alleged passport tampering in Philippine airports. The DOTr assured the public that such practices, if proven true, will not be tolerated.
Passengers are also reminded to keep their passports in good condition. If unsure about minor damage, they are advised to consult the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) passport centers or airport authorities before traveling.
