Globe, DMW and GASA unite to protect OFWs from scams

Online scams are growing more sophisticated and increasingly borderless, posing serious risks to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families—particularly in cross-border financial transactions and digital communications.

In response, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) formalized a landmark partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening digital protection for OFWs. The agreement focuses on enhancing digital safety programs, boosting cross-border intelligence sharing, and expanding access to practical tools that help migrant workers detect, prevent, and respond to scams.

Globe Telecom, which chairs the GASA Philippines Chapter, reinforced its commitment to responsible AI, privacy governance, and sustained scam prevention efforts through the collaboration. The GASA coalition brings together industry leaders including Gogolook, Meta Platforms, Google, Mastercard, and Scamwatch Pilipinas, with the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center participating as an observer.

Through the partnership, stakeholders will expand public awareness campaigns, strengthen digital literacy programs, conduct joint training sessions, and advance research initiatives to stay ahead of evolving scam tactics.

“Overseas Filipino workers make tremendous sacrifices for their families and for the country. They should not have to worry about falling victim to scams while working abroad,” said Derick Ohmar Adil, Globe’s Head of AI and Privacy Governance. He noted that the collaboration aims to ensure protection measures keep pace with emerging digital threats.

For DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, the partnership represents a critical step in safeguarding the hard-earned income of migrant workers.

“For our overseas Filipino workers, every peso they earn represents sacrifice, discipline, and love for their families. We cannot allow criminals to take that away through deception,” Cacdac said, emphasizing the need for stronger information sharing, digital literacy, and coordinated cross-border action.

The initiative underscores Globe’s broader push for digital safety, cybersecurity, and responsible AI governance, while highlighting the importance of public-private collaboration in combating cyber-enabled crimes that transcend borders.

Through sustained cooperation and shared accountability, Globe, GASA, and the DMW aim to empower Filipinos worldwide to navigate the digital space more safely and securely.
