Globe successfully pilots satellite-powered mobile connectivity

Globe is breaking new ground in mobile technology by expanding its tests of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), bringing satellite-powered mobile services closer to everyday Filipinos—especially those in remote areas.

Direct-to-Phone Satellite Trials Underway
Partnering with global Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite providers, Globe is testing Direct-to-Cellular (D2C) or Satellite-to-Phone (Sat2Phone) technology. This innovation allows regular mobile phones to connect directly to satellites—no extra gear needed.

Reaching the Unreachable
These trials aim to deliver next-gen connectivity to places beyond the reach of traditional cell towers. Globe has already made history with the Philippines’ first satellite SMS and voice service trials, and is now testing advanced NTN tech (3GPP Pre-release 17) to prepare for commercial rollout.

Live Voice Call via Satellite: A First
In a recent pilot with Lynk Global, Globe successfully completed a live voice call using satellite networks—proving the tech’s readiness for wider deployment.

“We’re making sure no Filipino is left behind,” said Gerhard Tan, Globe’s Senior Director for Technology Strategy and Innovation. “Satellite-to-phone connectivity brings us closer to universal access, especially in areas where building traditional networks is tough.”

Tech for Emergencies and Inclusion
Beyond daily use, Globe sees NTN as a game-changer for disaster response and emergency communications—where fast, reliable connections can save lives.

Guided by its Alagang Globe advocacy, the company continues to invest in inclusive, resilient, and future-ready digital solutions for all communities.
