A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook Ilocos Norte on Sunday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tectonic quake was recorded at 9:45 a.m., with its epicenter located 63 kilometers northwest of Currimao at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs reported that Instrumental Intensity I—or scarcely perceptible shaking—was felt in San Nicolas and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, and in Sinait, Ilocos Sur. Instrumental intensity refers to the strength of ground motion recorded by instruments.
Authorities advised residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions as aftershocks may follow the tremor.
In response, the Currimao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) immediately conducted roving and monitoring operations, particularly in coastal areas, to ensure residents’ safety and assess any possible damage, according to an official statement posted on Facebook.
