Mother of rescued Filipina-American thanks AFP after family’s safe return to US

The mother of Filipina-American Chantal Anicoche expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division following her family’s safe return to the United States on Friday, January 30.

In a message sent to Col. Michael Aquino, 2ID Spokesperson and Public Affairs Office Chief, Mrs. Anicoche praised the professionalism, compassion, and humanitarian care extended to her daughter from the time of her rescue until her medical recovery. With her consent, the message was made public.

She highlighted the swift actions of government troops, the careful coordination among authorities, and the continuous medical attention provided at the Army Station Hospital. She also commended the division for treating her daughter and family with respect, dignity, and discretion during what she described as a challenging and emotional period.

“Our family feels immense gratitude—not only for her safe rescue but also for the respect and care shown during such a difficult time. We deeply appreciate the unwavering commitment of your personnel to their duty and to protecting innocent lives,” Mrs. Anicoche said.

The mother also acknowledged the 2ID personnel for ensuring the smooth arrival of her family in the Philippines and prioritizing their safety, noting that the support they received left a lasting impression.

Chantal Anicoche was rescued on January 8 by government troops conducting clearing operations in Barangay Cabacao, Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro. She had been abandoned by her companions amid successive encounters between government forces and New People’s Army (NPA) elements in the area and was immediately provided with medical and humanitarian assistance.

In response, Col. Aquino said the message reflects the core values that guide the Army, particularly in operations involving civilians affected by armed conflict.

“Our duty is to protect lives and uphold human dignity. We are grateful for the trust placed in our soldiers and medical personnel and remain committed to carrying out our mission with professionalism, compassion, and respect for every individual,” Col. Aquino said.

The 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division reiterated its commitment to people-centered and humanitarian operations, emphasizing that service to the public remains at the heart of its mission.
