President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. affirmed the Philippines’ readiness to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, vowing to advance practical, inclusive, and measurable initiatives** that deliver tangible benefits to the peoples of Southeast Asia.
In a statement delivered during the 47th ASEAN Plenary Session at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, President Marcos emphasized ASEAN’s vital role in promoting regional stability, cooperation, and progress.



According to Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, the President reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to realizing the ASEAN Vision 2045, which envisions a resilient, inclusive, and dynamic regional community.
President Marcos expressed gratitude to Malaysia for its hospitality and officially welcomed Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s newest member. He also extended condolences to Thailand over the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
Highlighting ASEAN Centrality, the President stressed its role in maintaining peace, stability, and collaboration across the Indo-Pacific. He also reaffirmed the Philippines’ adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the BBNJ Agreement to protect marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable ocean governance.
On the economic front, President Marcos cited the signing of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0 Upgrade, underscoring the Philippines’ commitment to open markets, infrastructure development, and sustained regional growth.
He also underscored the need for inclusive and sustainable development, calling for stronger social protection systems, enhanced disaster resilience and deeper environmental cooperation among member states.
