A Philippine hawk-eagle was rescued after reportedly colliding with a tree while diving for prey in Barangay Suklayin, Baler on Saturday.
Farmer Cesar Santiago found the weakened raptor in a rice field and said the bird appeared to have hit its head against a tree during the dive.
According to Santiago, the impact caused the eagle to weaken, allowing him to safely catch it by hand. He then brought the bird to his home, secured it in a cage, and immediately reported the incident to the Baler Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
MENRO chief Maria Liza Costa sent staff member Rabbi Jan Angara to respond to the report. The eagle was later turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for proper handling and care.
The DENR said the bird will be brought to a veterinary facility for examination. Once cleared and deemed strong enough, the Philippine hawk-eagle (Nisaetus philippensis) will be released back into its natural habitat.
