Pope Leo XIV: Entrust the new year to God

As 2025 drew to a close, Pope Leo XIV called on the faithful to entrust everything to God as they cross from the old year into the new.

Speaking at his final General Audience of the year on Wednesday, the Pope reflected on the past months, marked by events of both joy and suffering. He cited the pilgrimage of countless faithful during the Holy Year as moments of grace, alongside painful experiences such as the death of Pope Francis and the ongoing wars afflicting many parts of the world.

For this reason, Pope Leo said the Church invites believers to bring all their joys and trials before God, asking Him to renew His grace and mercy in the days ahead.

The Pope highlighted the tradition of singing the Te Deum on the evening of December 31 as an expression of thanksgiving for the blessings received throughout the year. Quoting Pope Francis, he contrasted true Christian gratitude—rooted in praise and wonder—with a worldly gratitude focused on self-interest.

This spirit of thanksgiving, he said, also calls for an honest examination of conscience, seeking forgiveness for moments when God’s inspirations were ignored and His gifts not fully used.

Pope Leo also pointed to the theme of journey that marked the Jubilee Year, noting how pilgrims from around the world traveled to the Tomb of Saint Peter. He said this pilgrimage reflects human life itself—a journey whose ultimate destination is communion with God beyond space and time.

Another powerful sign of the Jubilee, the Pope said, is passing through the Holy Door, a gesture that expresses a “yes” to God and a desire to begin a new life shaped by grace, forgiveness, and love for one’s neighbor.

Reflecting on the message of Christmas, Pope Leo recalled the words of Saint Leo the Great, who proclaimed joy for saints, sinners, and all people alike. This invitation, he said, remains open to everyone today—calling the faithful to hope, conversion, and renewed commitment.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo echoed Pope Paul VI’s words from the Jubilee of 1975, summarizing the heart of the Christian message in one truth: God is love, mercy, forgiveness, and life.

“May these thoughts,” the Pope said, “accompany us as we pass from the old year to the new, and throughout our lives.”
