SBMA’s Recyclables Program makes it to Green Destinations 2025 Top 100 Stories

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has earned international recognition as its Recyclables Collection Program (RCE) was named one of the 2025 Top 100 Stories by Netherlands-based Green Destinations. The program was cited in the “Good Practice Stories” category for sustainable tourism, highlighting SBMA’s innovative approach to circular economy initiatives.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño said the award is the agency’s first international recognition for sustainability. “The RCE is part of our efforts to make the Subic Bay Freeport Zone the first carbon-neutral economic zone in the Philippines,” Aliño said. The program, held biannually, engages SBMA departments, local companies, and residents in collecting and managing recyclables such as paper, plastics, metals, e-waste, used oil, busted bulbs, and expired medicines.

Proceeds from the RCE benefit local charities, including the Missionaries of Charity shelter for abandoned seniors and Bantay Bata 163, as well as initiatives like grocery packs for outsourced utility workers. OIC-Senior Deputy Administrator Amethya Dela Llana emphasized that the program aims to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, positioning Subic Bay as the country’s first Green Port City.

SBMA Ecology Center OIC Rossell L. Abuyo added, “The RCE transforms waste management from a disposal problem into a system that generates resources, encourages community participation, and supports social causes, fully embodying circular economy principles.”

The Green Destinations 2025 Top 100 Stories honors global sustainable tourism projects. Other awardees included Del Carmen in Siargao, recognized for its transformation from mangrove cutting to a Ramsar Wetland of international importance, and Cayo District in Belize for sustainable tourism initiatives.
