SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, has partnered with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the annual 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW). The initiative, which runs from November 25 to December 12, aims to raise awareness and mobilize action against VAW under the theme “VAW Bigyang Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras!” (End VAW, Now is the Time!).
The ceremonial lighting of the SM Mall of Asia globe in orange, the campaign’s signature color, signified the launch of the advocacy. Other SM malls, including SM North EDSA, SM Megamall, and SM Aura, also illuminated their facades in orange to symbolize solidarity with the global movement against VAW.
PCW Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla underscored the importance of advocating for women’s rights and fostering gender equality. UNFPA Country Representative Dr. Leila Joudane stressed the urgency of addressing the increasing cases of VAW, calling for stronger preventative measures and support for survivors.
SM Cares reaffirmed its dedication to fostering safe and inclusive spaces. “Our malls are all-inclusive and safe spaces where everyone is welcome. There is no place for violence against women and their children,” said Atty. Pearly Turley, Senior Assistant Vice President for Corporate Compliance Group and Program Director for Women of SM Cares.
The campaign is supported by various activities and partnerships, including educational initiatives to increase public awareness. By collaborating with PCW and UNFPA, SM Cares seeks to amplify its impact, empowering survivors and advocating for a future free from violence.
This joint effort reflects the shared commitment of SM, PCW, and UNFPA to build a safer, more equitable society for all.
