SM PRIME LEADS THE WAY TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIATIVES

As the world faces the mounting challenges of climate change, the need for sustainable energy solutions has never been more urgent. With its abundant sunlight, the Philippines is uniquely positioned to harness solar power to mitigate climate change’s impact. In 2024, Manila alone experienced approximately 4,440 hours of daylight, offering significant potential for solar energy generation.

Recognizing this potential early on, SM Prime took a groundbreaking step in 2014, when SM North EDSA became the first commercial property in the Philippines to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. This pioneering installation, once the largest in Southeast Asia, marked the beginning of SM Prime’s commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

SM Supermalls President Steven Tan shares, “SM’s environmental sustainability began with energy and water conservation. Revolutionizing our malls’ energy efficiency through renewable sources magnifies our responsibility to serving people and the planet.”

Today, SM Supermalls operates 44 malls equipped with solar PV systems, generating a combined peak energy capacity of 51.6 megawatts (MW). The largest installation is located at SM City Santa Rosa, which is powered by a total of 96,000 solar panels across malls in Luzon and Visayas, covering an area of 33 hectares. This achievement positions SM Prime as the leader in solar energy in the Philippines, with the country’s largest solar energy portfolio.

The 51.6 MW of solar power capacity significantly reduces carbon emissions, providing clean energy for mall operations like lighting and escalators. This shift from reliance on fossil fuels to solar power also helps decrease the demand for coal, contributing to a cleaner environment and reducing the carbon footprint. The shift in energy sourcing also stabilizes the national grid, easing the pressure on power providers and helping to prevent electricity shortages.

SM Prime’s dedication to sustainability goes beyond solar energy. The company’s efforts also extend to waste management, water conservation, and air quality initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to minimizing its environmental impact. These actions are part of SM Prime’s broader strategy, which aims for a Net Zero future by 2040.

By harnessing renewable energy and promoting eco-conscious practices, SM Prime is not only leading the way toward a cleaner, greener Philippines but also inspiring other businesses to adopt more sustainable practices. Through these innovations, SM Prime is helping pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for the country and the planet.
