SM Supermalls to open First-Ever Sensory Lab at SM Mall of Asia

SM Supermalls, through its CSR arm SM Cares, is set to open the first-ever SM Sensory Lab at SM Mall of Asia—an inclusive, calming space designed to support individuals with sensory sensitivities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing disorder (SPD), and anxiety disorder.

The SM Sensory Lab: Calming Corner strengthens SM Cares’ long-standing advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, advancing its mission to make every mall visit welcoming, accessible, and compassionate. The space offers visitors a quiet retreat from the hustle of mall environments, ensuring that every Filipino can enjoy a comfortable malling experience.

Developed in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), and the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), the initiative highlights SM’s leadership in promoting empathy and barrier-free spaces across its malls.

“The SM Sensory Lab represents our vision of inclusivity and care,” said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “Through this calming space, we hope to create an environment where every visitor—especially those with sensory sensitivities—feels safe, supported, and truly welcome.”

A Calming, Thoughtfully Designed Environment
The Sensory Lab features soft lighting, muted colors, and a quiet atmosphere that help reduce sensory overload. Comfortable seating, cushions, blankets, and sensory tools provide tactile comfort, while visual supports and schedules help visitors feel secure and oriented.

The space is free to access for children and adults with sensory sensitivities, accompanied by a guardian or caregiver. Organized and clutter-free, the room is designed to promote calm, safety, and emotional regulation.

Redefining Malling Through Inclusion
“SM Mall of Asia is proud to lead this effort toward more inclusive malling experiences,” Tan added. “True hospitality means making sure everyone—regardless of their needs—has a place where they feel comfortable and cared for.”

As the first SM Supermall to introduce a Sensory Lab, SM Mall of Asia sets the precedent for similar spaces to be rolled out across the country.

Celebrating 40 Super Years of Evolving With Every You, SM Supermalls continues to grow with Filipino communities, championing sustainability, innovation, and inclusive spaces that redefine the future of malling.
