Safe water for Boholanos: BDO backs Bohol firm for sustainable water solutions

With many communities across the island struggling with limited access to safe and reliable drinking water, BDO Unibank Inc. is stepping in to help change the tide—by financing the efforts of Richli Water, a local utility provider committed to sustainable water solutions.

Unlike most water systems in Bohol that rely heavily on groundwater, Richli Water taps into surface water sources—rivers and springs—to ensure a cleaner, more sustainable supply while helping protect underground aquifers from saltwater intrusion and contamination. This strategy is key in curbing the rise of waterborne diseases like diarrhea, which remain a health concern in areas with compromised water sources.

With support from BDO, Richli Water was able to expand its pipeline network and build a new state-of-the-art water treatment plant in Trinidad, Boho to provide more households with consistent access to potable water.

“BDO’s loan has been a game changer for us,” said Ralph Miguel B. Lim, President of Richli Water. “It enabled us to develop an extensive pipeline network that delivers safe water across Bohol. Sustainable methods require significant investment, and BDO’s support is helping us meet demand while protecting the environment.”

The partnership was officially marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by key leaders including Department of Health Secretary Dr. Teodoro Herbosa, DOH Region VII Director Dr. Jaime S. Bernadas, and Trinidad Mayor Atty. Roberto C. Cajes, along with Richli Water executives Richard E. Lim (Chairman) and Engr. Alfredo T. Calinawan (General Manager).

Looking ahead, Richli Water plans to build additional treatment facilities and is exploring wastewater treatment systems to provide a more comprehensive water solution for Bohol’s growing population.

To maintain water quality, the company performs hourly on-site testing for turbidity, chlorine, and pH levels. Additionally, third-party laboratory tests are conducted twice a year to comply with DOH standards, ensuring the water remains safe for public use.

This initiative is a testament to BDO’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility. By backing companies like Richli Water, the bank continues to foster inclusive progress and build a better future for Filipino communities—one municipality at a time.
