TODAY IN HISTORY

On this day in 1955, Disneyland, the visionary theme park by Walt Disney, opened amidst unexpected chaos. Originally planned for 11,000 guests, the event saw 28,000 attendees due to counterfeit tickets. Broadcasted by ABC with hosts Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings, and Ronald Reagan, the day was marred by food shortages, ride breakdowns, and scorching temperatures over 100°F. Despite these challenges, Disneyland persevered to become a global symbol of imagination and joy, with many original attractions still delighting visitors today.

As of this writing, as Disneyland celebrates its enduring legacy alongside other six resorts around the world—located in Florida, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and soon in Abu Dhabi—we reflect on its loud beginning.
