The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, the marketing arm of the Department of Tourism (DOT), has successfully concluded the Albay leg of its Community-Based Tourism (CBT) Marketing Enhancement Program. Held from December 6 to 10, the initiative was a collaborative effort with the Provincial Government of Albay and DOT Region V, aimed at empowering local communities with digital marketing, content creation, and sustainable tourism skills.
This program aligns with the government’s mission to enhance grassroots involvement in tourism development. By equipping local stakeholders with the tools and knowledge to showcase their cultural and natural attractions, the initiative fosters sustainable tourism that benefits both communities and visitors alike.
During the program, TPB visited seven Albay communities, each offering a glimpse into its unique heritage and eco-tourism potential. The PHILCERAMICS Association in Tiwi displayed exquisite ceramic creations, while the Tabaco Cutlery Makers Association (TACUMA) showcased handcrafted cutlery.
The Malilipot Abaca Weavers demonstrated traditional weaving techniques, and the Libon Eco-Tourist Guides Organization (LET’S GO) provided engaging eco-tourism and farm experiences. Jovellar’s Underground River Guides offered eco-conscious river tours, and Polangui’s Galuda Farm highlighted local specialties like santan coco jam and pili nuts. The renowned Puto Makers of Oas shared their craft behind the celebrated Puto de Oas rice cakes.
Cultural and culinary showcases enriched the program further, with participants savoring traditional Bicolano dishes such as Tinutungan na Manok, a native chicken stew in smoked coconut milk, and Pinangat, a taro-leaf-wrapped protein dish. Attendees also explored the natural beauty of Albay, including a tour of the Jovellar Underground River.
To support typhoon recovery in the region, the program opened with a fundraising concert, Musika Para Sa Bikol: Himig ng Bayanihan, at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation on December 6. Featuring performers like Kim Ji-Soo, Gene Loves Jezebel, and local talents, the concert embodied the Filipino spirit of bayanihan while raising funds for affected areas.
The Albay leg underscores TPB’s commitment to using sustainable tourism as a catalyst for local economic growth. Building on this success, TPB plans to expand the CBT Marketing Enhancement Program in 2025 with workshops in Zamboanga, Lake Sebu, Davao, Cordillera, Sorsogon, and Northern Samar.
By providing hands-on experiences, training, and resources, TPB continues to empower communities to take charge of their tourism future, promoting the Philippines as a sustainable and inclusive travel destination.
