UP, Converge forge landmark partnership to advance Filipino digital talent

The University of the Philippines (UP) and Converge ICT Solutions Inc. have entered into a three-year strategic partnership to strengthen the country’s digital workforce through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at Quezon Hall.

The agreement sets a framework for collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud computing, smart manufacturing, and digital business transformation. It aims to equip Filipino students, particularly those in AI, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Business Administration, with globally competitive skills while fostering innovation rooted in Filipino values.

UP President Angelo A. Jimenez described the partnership as “a convergence of academic aspiration and industrial innovation,” while Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony H. Uy emphasized building a sustainable pipeline of Filipino technology leaders who can compete globally and drive domestic innovation.

The partnership will roll out in three phases, starting with the Future Forward Management Trainee Program, a nine-month pilot offering intensive training in AI, product development, and digital technology. Future initiatives include hackathons, speaker series, speed mentoring, co-developed curricula, and the establishment of a Converge Innovation Lab @ UP to serve as a hub for research and real-world applications.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, guest at the signing, hailed the public-private alliance as a key tool in boosting the government’s digitalization programs and national competitiveness.

UP Vice President for Digital Transformation Peter A. Sy said the initiative demonstrates how academe-industry alliances can prepare students not just for existing jobs but also to create new industries and solutions.

The MOU also covers social responsibility programs for underserved students and faculty-industry exchanges, ensuring inclusive development and a two-way flow of knowledge. With annual review mechanisms and potential extensions, the UP-Converge partnership is expected to evolve alongside emerging technologies and opportunities, setting a new model for higher education and industry collaboration in the Philippines.
