US pledges $1M in Emergency Aid to Typhoon- and Quake-Stricken Philippines

In response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino and recent earthquakes, the United States government announced on Saturday a $1 million emergency aid package to support the Philippines’ relief and recovery operations.

Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) slammed into the Visayas and parts of Mindanao on Tuesday, unleashing torrential rains and widespread flooding. The storm left 164 people dead, 176 injured, and 79 missing. Capiz province was among the hardest hit, with entire communities submerged under floodwaters.

The US Department of State said the aid will provide “immediate life-saving assistance,” including emergency shelter, clean water, sanitation, and logistics support—particularly in severely affected areas like Cebu.

“With another powerful storm approaching, US disaster assistance will remain closely coordinated with the Philippine government and local partners to ensure rapid and effective relief,” the department stated.

The US emphasized its commitment to stand by the Philippines during times of crisis, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two nations. “As millions of Filipinos face the aftermath of these disasters, our swift response reflects the strength and resilience of our longstanding ties,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the country braces for Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong), which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility late Friday. Forecasts warn it could intensify into a super typhoon as it nears Northern Luzon by Sunday. (Philippine News Agency | Joyce Ann Recamora)
