Angeles City to push Anti- Mendicancy Law implementation

Angeles City Mayor Carmelo ‘Pogi’ Lazatin Jr. recently presided over a meeting with Chief Adviser IC Calaguas and some department heads in strengthening the city government’s implementation of the Anti-Mendicancy Law which will start on May 18, 2023.

Presidential Decree 1563 or the Anti-Mendicancy Law of 1978, is aimed to “control and eradicate mendicancy”, as well as to promote protection of life, social justice, property and dignity of the country’s citizens.

The law states, giving alms would only make beggars think that they don’t need to find a decent job anymore to earn money for a living, as they could easily make money by asking people for it by begging in the streets.

Lazatin also ordered City Social Welfare and Development Officer Edna Duaso to rescue homeless families and members of the indigenous community.

A ‘Balik-Probinsya’ program is also being eyed by the city government for the homeless families.

Present during the meeting are City Engineer Donato Dizon, Angeles City Economic Development and Investment Promotions Officer Irish Bonus-Llego, Angeles City Traffic Development Officer Kiko Pangilinan, Angeles City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Rudy Simeon, Angeles City Emergency Disaster Command Center Head Michael Lising, Angeles City Anti-Drug Abuse Council Head Ricky Saul, and Dong Mendiola.
