Our Mother’s Day Special continues, and we focus the spotlight on another powerful, inspiring mother. This time, journalist, coffee connoisseur and single mom Joann Manabat.
At what age did you become a mother? How were you able to handle it?
I was 20 when I gave birth to Julienne but her father left us just as I entered my first trimester. My parents helped me with the finances and in taking care of her. I needed to find a work-at-home job so I can still be a full-time mother while making at least both of our ends meet. I worked as a virtual assistant. I also started writing as a lifestyle columnist for Pampanga News where my dad, Ashley, became my first editor. It was something I did to have an extra hustle on the side. To earn more was my goal but to show her faith and love became my driving force.
What has been the hardest period of motherhood for you and how did you deal with it?
Motherhood has always been challenging. Never a day was it easy. There are things you always need to consider, patience that you need to keep longer, and faith that you need to keep strong so you won’t fall apart.
What, for you, has been the best part of motherhood?
Seeing my children happy has always been the best part of being a mother. To watch them become who they are, anticipate who they will be brings a different level of excitement.
Is there anything you wish you had done differently?
No. I believe life happens for a reason, even the falling of a leaf.
As a mother, what is your biggest dream for your children?
For them to be someone with a great attitude towards life and live it with a stronger faith and simplified purpose.
