CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is working on the development of a plan to curb flooding in Pampanga and Bulacan.

In a meeting with Woodfields Consultants, DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain stressed the need to come up with a plan for the Central Luzon-Pampanga River Floodway Flood Control Project with a retarding swamp in San Antonio and the Pampanga Delta Development Program Phase 2.

The widening of river channels and construction of viaducts, dikes, revetment works, cut-off channels, control weirs, floodgates and sluice gates are proposed engineering interventions to mitigate damage brought about by the incursion of river waters into communities.

“The components of the proposed flood control plan with a design consideration for a 100-year flood return period will capture flood mitigation for the entire Central Luzon, from Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Bulacan,” Sadain said. Situated in Central Luzon, the Pampanga River Basin from the mouth of Manila Bay traverses the provinces of Pampanga, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan.

Other major river networks connected to the Pampanga River Basin include the Talavera River, the Rio Chico River, the Pantabangan River, the Colonel River, the Peñaranda River, the Sacobia River, the San Miguel River and the Angat River. (PIA-3)
