DTI REMINDS CONSUMERS TO STAY VIGILANT AMID HOLIDAY SHOPPING RUSH

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has urged consumers to remain cautious and vigilant, particularly when shopping online, as demand increases during the holiday season.

DTI Pampanga Consumer Protection Division Chief Nathaniel Samson said the agency is actively monitoring online platforms to track market trends and detect suspicious activities amid the surge in digital transactions. He warned consumers to be wary of deals that appear too good to be true, noting that these are often associated with scams.

To minimize risks, the DTI advised shoppers to opt for safer payment options such as cash on delivery or payment upon receipt, especially when dealing with unfamiliar sellers. Samson explained that many scammers use personal social media accounts, making it difficult to trace them once payments are made online.

For in-store purchases, the agency reminded consumers of their right to information and encouraged them to compare prices across different stores before buying. The DTI also cautioned shoppers against impulse buying, particularly when malls are about to close, as hurried decisions may lead to regretful purchases.

The agency further emphasized safety reminders for Christmas-related products, particularly holiday lights. Consumers were advised to check for the Philippine Standard (PS) mark or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker to ensure product safety, avoid over-connecting lights to prevent overheating, and use indoor lights only in appropriate settings to reduce fire risks.

Meanwhile, DTI Pampanga Provincial Director Elenita Ordonio urged consumers to verify the legitimacy of online sellers, especially those requiring down payments. She advised buyers to ask for business licenses and permits and to confirm registrations with the DTI to avoid fraudulent transactions.

Ordonio assured the public that while some online fraud cases may fall outside the agency’s jurisdiction, these are referred to the appropriate authorities, including law enforcement agencies. She reiterated DTI’s call for heightened vigilance to protect consumers from scams during the holiday shopping rush.
