Globe, gov’t boost fight vs mobile scams

Globe Telecom has strengthened its partnership with government agencies by conducting a technical training session aimed at improving the country’s capability to detect and disrupt mobile-based scams and cyber threats.

The initiative follows Globe’s recent turnover of IMSI Catcher Detectors to key government agencies as part of efforts to boost mobile security and combat illegal activities exploiting mobile networks.

Representatives from the National Telecommunications Commission, Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and National Bureau of Investigation participated in the hands-on learning session focused on operationalizing the detection tools in real-world enforcement.

The technical walkthrough was led by Altaf Shaik of Technische Universität Berlin, who shared insights on how scammers exploit vulnerabilities in mobile networks and discussed practical ways to detect and mitigate these threats.

According to Globe Group General Counsel Atty. Froi Castelo, the challenge goes beyond simply acquiring technology and requires stronger coordination and a deeper understanding of the evolving threat landscape.

Meanwhile, Globe Chief AI and Data Officer and Chief Information Security Officer Anton Bonifacio emphasized the importance of quick response and coordination among agencies in identifying rogue signals and preventing further attacks.

The training also highlighted the value of information sharing and synchronized enforcement efforts among government agencies to better address increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Globe said it remains committed to working closely with government partners to strengthen the country’s digital defenses and protect Filipinos from evolving mobile-based risks as mobile connectivity continues to expand nationwide.
