Church network calls for prayer, vigilance ahead of Duterte impeachment trial

The Catholic Church’s social action network has mobilized communities across the country to promote accountability and civic responsibility ahead of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte as the Senate convenes as an impeachment court on Monday.

In a statement, Caritas Philippines, together with its nationwide social action groups, bishops, and clergy, encouraged Filipinos to organize prayer rallies, bell-ringing campaigns, and other peaceful civic activities aimed at safeguarding democratic institutions and upholding the rule of law.

The group stressed the importance of vigilance amid recent developments in the Senate, emphasizing the need for citizens to peacefully unite in defense of democracy.

According to Caritas Philippines, the initiative seeks to bring Filipinos together beyond political affiliations and religious backgrounds, describing the impeachment proceedings as a test of civic responsibility rather than a partisan issue.

The organization also cited ongoing national challenges, including corruption issues, economic difficulties, and broader governance concerns, as reasons for encouraging greater public participation and awareness.

Earlier, Gilbert Garcera, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, called on the public to remain vigilant to help ensure a fair and credible impeachment trial.

As part of the campaign, Caritas encouraged Filipinos to offer daily prayers at noon and in the evening for senators, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and government officials, asking for wisdom and discernment throughout the proceedings.

Churches and households were also urged to ring bells, light candles, and share only verified and fact-checked information related to the trial within their communities.

Organizers said the campaign aims to counter division, deception, hatred, and indifference while promoting transparency, accountability, and active civic engagement as the impeachment process unfolds.
