Filipino wild card Alexandra Eala advanced to the Berlin Open semifinals after a commanding 6-3, 6-4 upset win over world No. 8 Elina Svitolina in the WTA 500 tournament in Germany on Friday.
Eala, ranked world No. 35, continued her strong run on grass following earlier victories over world No. 2 Elena Rybakina and Donna Vekic.
She will next face Czech player Linda Noskova in the semifinals, in a rematch of their Indian Wells encounter, which Noskova previously won.
The victory marks another breakthrough performance for Eala as she continues her rise on the WTA tour.
