Senate President Win Gatchalian has renewed his call to ban smartphones and other electronic devices during class hours in public and private schools, citing growing safety concerns and the need to minimize classroom distractions.
Gatchalian reiterated his proposal under the Electronic Gadget-Free Schools Act (Senate Bill No. 627) following the suspension of face-to-face classes at a public school in Batangas due to a shooting threat. He also cited a foiled school attack in Laguna earlier this year involving students allegedly recruited by foreign handlers through the online game Roblox.
The proposed measure would prohibit students from Kindergarten to Senior High School from using smartphones in school, while allowing exemptions for teacher-directed educational activities, medical needs, emergencies, and other situations involving safety concerns.
Gatchalian said the proposal aims not only to strengthen school safety but also to help students stay focused on their studies without unnecessary distractions.
