From matcha runs to everyday spending: Inside Gen Z’s cashless era

For the younger generation, going cashless has become part of a modern lifestyle. From online shopping and late-night food deliveries to ride bookings and quick matcha runs, almost everything can now be done with just a tap or scan.

In fast-growing areas like Pampanga, where young professionals balance work, side hustles, and travel, cashless payments help them stay on the go. The trend is reflected in the numbers, with more Filipinos choosing speed, convenience, and flexibility over cash.

According to a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas study, 90% of Filipino adults now own mobile phones, while 89% use the internet. Meanwhile, the use of digital financial services such as e-wallets and debit cards has increased to 62%.

Convenience matters
Today’s generation values not only security but also convenient, on-the-go access to banking services.

A 2025 third-party consumer research study found that users prefer banks that are accessible, secure, and easy to use—whether they are scanning a QR code, paying with a card, or using their mobile phone. That is why BDO continues to develop solutions that make everyday banking simpler, more secure, and seamlessly aligned with how clients prefer to pay.

For Gen Z star Belle Mariano, her digital wallet has become an everyday essential.

“BDO Pay is very convenient,” she shared. “Maiiwan natin ‘yung wallet natin sa car, maiiwan natin ‘yung wallet sa bahay, but we always have our mobile phone.”

She added that BDO Pay removes the need to cash in funds.

“It’s already linked to your debit cards and credit cards. No more ‘OMG, wala na akong load’ moments,” Belle said.

Your everyday spending and travel companion
For people who are constantly on the move, going cashless means having flexible payment options that extend beyond mobile apps.

Actress and recording artist Sarah Geronimo said her BDO Debit Card is an essential travel companion.

“Even if I don’t have cash, I can pay with my BDO Card in stores or just withdraw from ATMs anywhere in the world,” she shared.

Sarah also appreciates the convenience of digital and card-based payments for both work and personal expenses.

“If meron akong bibilhin, I just use my BDO Debit Card. It makes spending easy for me,” she said.

Extra rewards for going digital
Going cashless also comes with added perks. Users can explore BDO Rewards through the app and enjoy a wide range of exclusive offers for Credit and Debit Card holders.

For Pampanga residents, those who apply for a BDO Credit Card or open a bank account with a BDO Debit Card at participating branches until July 24, 2026 can receive limited-edition freebies while supplies last. BDO Fiesta will also be held on August 1 at SM City Pampanga, giving customers another chance to enjoy exclusive activities, offers, and rewards.
