3 cops face charges over Baliwag mistaken identity case

Three police officers have undergone inquest proceedings after criminal complaints were filed against them in connection with a mistaken identity incident involving a businessman in Baliwag City, Bulacan, the Police Regional Office 3 (PRO3) said.

The officers are facing complaints for physical injuries, unjust vexation, grave coercion, slander by deed, and attempted kidnapping. PRO3 also said the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) is preparing an administrative case against the three.

The incident occurred on July 16 at a restaurant in Barangay Tangos, where a businessman alleged that several individuals identifying themselves as police officers attempted to force him into a vehicle. The complainant said the group left after realizing they had mistaken him for another person.

PRO3 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Jess B. Mendez said the swift filing of charges reflects the Philippine National Police’s commitment to accountability under its Internal Cleansing Program.

“The immediate inquest proceedings and filing of appropriate charges demonstrate that no one is above the law. Any violation committed by our personnel will be addressed through due process,” Mendez said.

PRO3 assured the public that it will continue to act promptly, fairly, and impartially on complaints against police personnel in line with existing laws and PNP policies.
