First District Rep. Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. has filed a bill seeking additional financial and educational assistance for families of public school teachers who die in the line of duty.
Filed on August 13, 2026, House Bill No. 10772, or the proposed “Survivorship Benefits Act for Teachers in Public Educational Institutions,” seeks a one-time ₱300,000 financial assistance for qualified beneficiaries of teachers whose deaths result from unlawful acts, accidents, or violent or traumatic incidents while performing authorized duties, traveling to official assignments, or serving as election personnel.
The proposed benefit would be provided in addition to existing benefits under RA 8291, or the GSIS Act of 1997.
The bill also seeks to provide education assistance for minor dependent children of deceased teachers in public basic and higher education institutions, subject to applicable requirements.
Lazatin said the measure recognizes the risks and sacrifices of teachers, particularly those assigned to remote “last-mile schools” and those serving as election personnel.
The lawmaker has also previously filed HB 5067, which seeks higher entry-level salaries for public school teachers, higher education teaching personnel, and public school non-teaching staff.
