The convergence of energy and digital infrastructure is gaining ground as Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) and VITRO REIT, Inc. (VITRO) join forces to explore a sustainable, power-enabled digital infrastructure proposition in the Philippines.
MGEN and VITRO, a subsidiary of ePLDT within the PLDT Group, formalized their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) covering a joint feasibility study and potential development of integrated power and data center facilities.
The partnership brings together MGEN’s expertise in power generation and supply, including renewable energy, and VITRO’s capabilities in data center development, operations, connectivity, and engagement with hyperscalers and other prospective locators.
“This collaboration reflects the growing convergence between the energy and digital infrastructure sectors,” MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio said, noting that reliable, cost-competitive, and sustainable power is becoming increasingly important in determining where and how data centers are developed.
Power meets connectivity
Under the MOU, the two companies will undertake joint technical and commercial studies covering potential sites, power generation capacity, renewable energy resources, connectivity requirements, data center specifications, and commercial structures.
MGEN will identify potential data center sites integrated with power generation facilities and assess possible power supply arrangements. VITRO, meanwhile, will lead data center design and site studies, connectivity planning, and engagement with prospective hyperscalers and other locators.
Building for the digital economy
VITRO REIT President and CEO Victor S. Genuino said the collaboration could help create a more integrated proposition for prospective data center investors, particularly as energy availability, reliability, and cost remain important considerations for hyperscale and AI investments.
“VITRO is committed to working closely with the energy sector to help secure ample, stable, sustainable, and affordable energy for the digital infrastructure that supports the Philippines’ digital economy,” Genuino said.
The collaboration underscores the growing need to integrate power and connectivity into data center site selection as the Philippines prepares for rising demand for digital services and high-density computing infrastructure.
