Vice President and DepEd secretary Sara Duterte reported the Basic Education Report 2023 on Monday, January 30, 2023 which contains the state of education in the Philippines and the programs that the Department of Education will implement to improve the quality of education in answering the challenges, and solve the problems faced by Filipino students and teachers today.
According to her report the major challenges in DepEd today are lack of school infrastructure and resources, issues in learners’ well-being, curriculum problems, low employability among senior high school graduates, weak training programs, and necessary competencies for teachers.
She presented the MATATAG agenda, dubbed “MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa” as a guide to the new direction of DepEd and stakeholders in solving basic education challenges.
The four critical components proposed in her report were:
1. Make the curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready, active, and responsible citizens. 2. Take steps to accelerate delivery of basic education facilities and services.
3. Take good care of learners by promoting learners well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment.
4. Give support to teachers to teach better.
“We know that the road will be bumpy, but our direction is clear. We know that the challenges are vast but we, Filipinos, are resilient. We will overcome. Tayo po ay magiging MATATAG. Tungo sa isang Bansang Makabata at Batang Makabansa.” VP Sara said. (VP Sara Duterte page)
