DepEd stresses importance of reading in nation building

The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Learning Resources (BLR), piloted the Storybook Recognition Rites and Reading Exhibit for the 4th National Competition on Storybook Writing in Tanza, Cavite on February 18.

During the Reading Exhibit, entries from different regions were featured. Storybook entries, exhibit booths of best programs, projects, processes, and practices from the Learning Resource Management Sections of the regions and divisions of DepEd and ABC+ were also showcased.

Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching Gina Gonong highlighted the importance of reading in nation building, and how the power of stories can inspire citizens, especially learners, to develop a desire for learning.

“Seeing all those stories today in the mother tongue, Filipino, and English, we have so much talent in the Philippines. So, we should do something to make sure that these talents prosper some more and you get to inspire other teachers and supervisors to write more. Because when you write more, you inspire readers,” Usec. Gonong emphasized.

During the program Book-based Interactive Storytelling and Open Mic Storytelling Sessions were also conducted. Other DepEd officials were also present in the event including Assistant Secretary for Curriculum and Teaching – Curriculum Development, Learning Resources, and Learning Delivery Alma Ruby Torio; BLR Directors Ariz Delson Acay Cawilan, Edward Jimenez, and Raul La Rosa; and Bureau of Learning Delivery Director Leila Areola.

The Storybook Recognition Rites is the culmination of the 4th National Competition on Storybook Writing, which recognizes the best writers, illustrators, and creators of children’s stories nationwide. (DepEd)
