DOH, national gov’t agencies collaborate to strengthen disaster risk reduction capacities

The Department of Health (DOH) together with other national government agencies attended the Pre-Launch of the 2024 Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) and the High-Level Meeting of the Organizing Inter-Agency Committee to discuss the preparations for the Philippine Hosting for the 2024 APMCDRR at the Philippine International Convention Center.

DOH was represented by Undersecretary Enrique A. Tayag and Assistant Secretary Gloria J. Balboa work closely to strengthen disaster risk reduction capacities of the country.

The Philippines actively took part in the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan on March 18, 2015, where the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) was adopted.

The SFDRR has four (4) priorities for action: Understanding disaster risk; Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk; Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience; and Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), in collaboration with the host country and other stakeholders, organizes the APMCDRR, which is the main regional platform for promoting the SFDRR in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The APMCDRR provides an opportunity for participants to exchange experiences, share good practices, and identify challenges and opportunities in disaster risk reduction. It aims to promote political commitment, cooperation, and knowledge-sharing to reduce disaster risk and build resilience in the Asia-Pacific Region. Next year, the UNDRR invited the Philippines to host the 10th session of the APMCDRR.

This pre-launch event and meeting was attended by other national government agencies such as DENR, DOT, DFA, DOF, DOST, DBM, DOTr, NEDA, DICT, DILG, DPWH, CCC and MMDA which was chaired by Secretary Maria Antonia Y. Loyzaga of DENR, Secretary Maria Esperanza Christina G. Fransco of Tourism, and Secretary Carlito G. Galvez, Jr. of National Defense. (DOH)
