From Waste to Worth: SM Champions Recycling for a Circular Future

A simple act of throwing trash in the right bin can make a big difference. At SM Supermalls, visitors are encouraged to take part in building a waste-free future through the Recyclable-Disposable-Compostable (RDC) bins under the SM Green Movement.

More than just labeled containers, these bins represent a growing effort to recover valuable materials and keep waste out of landfills and oceans. At the heart of this initiative is a simple message: recyclables come down to three main types—bottles, cans, and cartons—and each has the potential for a second life.

Glass and plastic bottles, for instance, can be returned to manufacturers and reused. Glass bottles may be cleaned and refilled, while PET plastics can be transformed into new containers or even fabric for clothing. Cans, whether tin or aluminum, can be recycled repeatedly while using less energy than producing new ones. Cartons, on the other hand, remain one of the most sustainable materials, requiring minimal new resources when processed into paper products.

However, SM emphasizes that these materials only retain their value when disposed of properly. Without proper segregation, high-value recyclables risk ending up as waste instead of being reused.

Through partnerships with various recycling and manufacturing companies, SM ensures that properly sorted materials are collected and reintroduced into the production cycle—bringing the concept of “recyclable” closer to becoming fully “recycled.”

With every bottle, can, and carton placed in the right bin, shoppers become part of a larger movement. In these small, everyday actions lies the power to protect the environment and move closer to a truly circular economy.
