Senator Win Gatchalian stressed the need for stricter online gambling laws to dismantle underground operations and safeguard Filipinos from the risks associated with online gambling.
According to Gatchalian, a total ban may not sufficiently deter gambling activities, citing e-sabong as an example, which continues to thrive despite being prohibited. He warned that without stronger regulations, operators may simply move underground, making monitoring and enforcement more difficult while exposing vulnerable sectors, particularly the youth, to greater risks.
The senator earlier filed a measure seeking tighter regulation of online gambling to address rising cases of addiction and the social problems linked to the vice, including crime and mental health issues.
“Kailangan nating mas higpitan pa ang mga regulasyon sa online gambling dahil padami nang padami ang mga Pilipino na nalululong dito at dumadami din ang mga buhay at pangarap na nasisira dahil dito,” Gatchalian said.
