Senator Win Gatchalian called on the government to accelerate the country’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs), citing the need to reduce dependence on imported fuel amid rising global oil prices.
Gatchalian welcomed the administration’s ongoing talks with a major Japanese car manufacturer planning to build EVs in the Philippines, describing the move as a step in the right direction, especially as tensions in the Middle East continue to drive fuel costs higher.
The senator emphasized that expanding EV use can help shield the economy from global energy shocks and provide a more sustainable transport alternative.
To speed up adoption, Gatchalian proposed stronger incentives for both consumers and manufacturers, including low- or zero-interest loans for EV buyers, toll fee exemptions, and free driving lessons for new EV users. He also stressed the need for the government to fulfill its commitments to provide incentives to EV manufacturers to encourage investments in the country.
