Megaworld switches off 300,000 lights for Earth Hour

Property giant Megaworld Corporation mobilized more than 300 developments across 17 townships nationwide in a large-scale participation in this year’s Earth Hour, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

During the hour-long switch-off, nearly 300,000 lights and electrical fixtures were turned off simultaneously, generating energy savings of around 50,000 kilowatt-hours and preventing approximately 36,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.

The impact, the company noted, is comparable to the annual carbon-filtering capacity of over 1,630 mature trees, highlighting the environmental significance of the initiative.

“Megaworld townships are living ecosystems made up of communities that become active champions of sustainability,” said Jose Arnulfo C. Batac, emphasizing the company’s long-term vision of building future-ready, environmentally responsible communities.

Through Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, the company also partnered with WWF-Philippines to host the country’s official Earth Hour switch-off event at ArcoVia City.

The initiative forms part of Megaworld’s MEGreen program, which aligns its environmental efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on energy efficiency, green building practices, and community-driven sustainability programs.

Megaworld has also advanced its sustainability efforts by transitioning its company-owned offices, hotels, malls, and residential properties to renewable energy, covering key townships such as Uptown Bonifacio, Eastwood City, McKinley Hill, Newport City, Boracay Newcoast, and Iloilo Business Park, among others.

The company’s participation in Earth Hour reflects its broader strategy to promote collective climate action while advancing sustainable urban development across the country.
