The structure of the Malolos Station for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) in Bulacan is now complete.
According to Department of Transportation (DOTr) NSCR System Deputy Project Manager Jojo Giron, the three-story station’s passenger platform is positioned between the two opposing railway tracks. This design means that when operations begin, trains stopping at the station will open their doors on the left side.
Japanese contractor Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Corporation Ltd. designed the platform in the center due to the limited land owned by the Philippine National Railways (PNR) in Malolos City. This setup is similar to the Shaw Boulevard, Boni, and Buendia stations of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), which were also designed by Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Corporation Ltd. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1997.
The new Malolos Station stands parallel to the former Manila Railway Company station, now known as PNR, which was originally built in 1891.
The ground floor of the station will serve as the main entrance and exit, directly connecting to a planned intermodal terminal for buses, jeepneys, and tricycles. Meanwhile, the first and second floors will be developed into commercial spaces, generating non-rail revenue to help repay the Official Development Assistance loan provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Since construction began in 2019, the 147-kilometer NSCR System—spanning from Clark International Airport in Pampanga to Calamba, Laguna—has already cost approximately P879 billion. The project is funded through JICA and the Asian Development Bank, with the latter supporting segments from Malolos to Clark International Airport and from Blumentritt in Manila to Calamba, Laguna.
Additionally, the Malolos City Government has proposed footbridges linking the NSCR station to key locations, including the Bulacan Eco-Commercial Building, Bulacan State University, Malolos Central Transport Terminal, and the provincial capitol. The city government will fund these connections through its National Tax Allocation share.
