Tarlac second district congressional candidate and former Governor Victor “VY” Yap has challenged his opponent, Tarlac City Mayor Cristy Angeles, to a public debate to let Tarlaqueños determine who is truthful and knowledgeable about governance.
Yap made the call during an interview on Jelexie Radio 91.1 on February 13, following accusations from Angeles’ camp alleging that loans made during the Yap administration were a misuse of taxpayers’ money.
Yap defended the loans, explaining that they were strategic investments aimed at serving the people, including the Service Delivery Network (SDN), a health initiative he claims has significantly benefited Tarlaqueños. He contrasted this with the 2-billion gymnatorium built under Angeles’ leadership, questioning its value to the community.
Yap also addressed rumors of a disqualification case against his sister, Tarlac City mayoral candidate and incumbent Governor Susan Yap, clarifying that the Commission on Elections confirmed her eligibility.
CRISTY EXPECTED TO DECLINE DEBATE
A local political analyst predicts that Mayor Cristy Angeles will likely decline Yap’s debate challenge, suggesting that she might struggle to defend her administration’s programs publicly. The analyst also noted that Team Angeles frequently engages in personal attacks and baseless accusations during their political gatherings.
Yap emphasized his readiness to engage in a public debate, along with Governor Susan Yap and Congressman Christian Yap, to present their programs and let the people of Tarlac make an informed choice.
