BSP, PNP file charges against individuals for Coin Mutilation

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have formally filed criminal charges against six individuals arrested for intentionally mutilating Philippine coins.

The arrests took place in separate operations conducted by the BSP and PNP in Siquijor and Boracay, Aklan.

The BSP’s Payments and Currency Investigation Group (PCIG) and the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) filed the complaints before the Siquijor Provincial and Aklan Provincial Prosecutor’s Offices.

Among the suspects is an individual known as “Jess,” who gained attention on social media for deliberately defacing a 10-Piso coin and turning it into a ring in Siquijor. Another person was also caught committing the same illegal act in Boracay.

Under Presidential Decree No. 247, the willful destruction, defacement, or mutilation of Philippine banknotes and coins is prohibited. Those found guilty can face imprisonment of up to five years and/or a fine of up to PHP20,000.

The BSP reminds the public to treat Philippine currency with respect, as it represents the country’s culture and heritage.

The BSP also urges individuals with information on currency mutilation to report it to their nearest police station or contact the BSP PCIG at pcig@bsp.gov.ph or via telephone numbers (02) 8988-4833 and (02) 8926-5092.
